If you are already a competent crew member, this is a popular combination of courses to take your sailing to the next level. This course has changed slightly for 2017. We now offer an RYA Day Skipper Practical certificate that is valid worldwide, rather than only in non-tidal areas. You no longer need to take an additional course to sail in northern Europe, the USA, or other tidal areas, but the level of theory required is now higher to ensure that you are safe to do so.
There are three elements to this package. When you book, we enrol you in the online RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship course. This is an excellent short course that will introduce you to navigation & chart-work. We supply you with full course materials, including practice charts and a simulation GPS plotter, plus a FREE set of navigation instruments for you to keep. You can work through the material at your own pace. You’ll get a certificate upon successful completion, which normally takes 6 – 10 hours. Everyone who has done the course says how good it is.
You then come to Greece for 7 days tuition at our base on the pretty island of Aegina. The first two days you are taught more theory in our bright airy classroom, which is fully equipped with modern teaching aids and desks to lay out your charts. We think you learn much better at this stage if you have room to spread out rather than trying to cope with the confines of a yacht. These two days will focus on bringing you up to speed with everything you’ll need to know on your practical course. We’ll make sure that you can answer the tidal questions that your instructor must now include under the new regulations. You’ll also cover light characteristics, sound signals, and ‘Med’ mooring techniques.
There’s no exam at the end of this course but, if you have done well enough and would like to test your knowledge, we may be able to arrange for an RYA Day Skipper examination during the following week.
On Sunday evening you join your yacht and spend the next five days sailing around the Saronic Gulf, visiting various ports and harbours, while you complete the RYA Day Skipper Practical syllabus.
What It Costs
The price is from 1176 EUR to 1652 EUR per person, depending on the time of year and whether you are coming alone or with a partner or friend who will share your cabin.*
* we never expect you to share a cabin with someone you don’t know – or to sleep in the saloon! You’ll get a proper cabin.
These prices includes absolutely everything except getting to us and evening meals, which are taken in local tavernas ashore. They include accommodation for two nights on our pretty island, with breakfasts and lunches (the taverna opposite our classroom serves some of the tastiest lunches on Aegina!)
On our yachts you’ll get freshly laundered linen & towels, good pillows, and bedding. We can lend you a breathable waterproof jacket as well to reduce the baggage you have to carry. In addition to the course pack for your ENS course, you’ll get your own set of navigation tools, a Day Skipper Practical course book and RYA certificates for each part of the course you successfully pass.
