It is a pre-requisite that anyone taking an RYA Day Skipper Practical course has the necessary theory. Please note that you are responsible for ensuring that you have adequate theory before attending your practical course – there is not time to learn it during the practical.
If you cannot attend a classroom course, the answer may be to study theory online. You can take courses at three levels:
- RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship
- RYA Day Skipper Shorebased
- RYA Yachtmaster / Coastal Skipper Shorebased
The courses provide comprehensive theoretical training at different levels from beginner to advanced.
This is a basic RYA navigation course that can be taken online. It only takes 10-15 hours to complete and can be done immediately before coming to Greece so everything will be fresh in your mind. This course does not cover all the theory that you will need at Day Skipper level. The ENS is a good introductory course and you will need to pass this beforehand if you want to participate in the two-day classroom course that forms part of our sailing packages. The ENS course, combined with the extra information you get on our 2-day training covers the theoretical knowledge to take an RYA Day Skipper course – read more here.
From 2017, all RYA Day Skipper certificates will be valid in both tidal and non-tidal waters, including northern Europe, the US and Canada.
The online RYA Day Skipper Shorebased course is designed to give you the theoretical knowledge you require to take your practical. It takes about 40 hours to complete, and includes an assessment. Successful students will receive an RYA Day Skipper Shorebsed certificate, which proves that they have studied to that level.
We provide online Day Skipper Shorebased courses, delivered by Navathome, a RYA Recognised Training Centre specialising in online training. Read more here.
If you have already completed an Essential Navigation and Seamanship course, Navathome also offer a course for you to upgrade your knowledge to RYA Day Skipper Shorebased level but you need to book this directly with Navathome.
This is an advanced course for those who want to take a Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster course and examination.
Before taking this course you must have passed the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased course, or a course at an equivalent level. It is not suitable for those who have only taken an ENS or other basic navigation course. Please contact us if you need guidance as to whether this course is appropriate for you.
This online course is provided by Navathome, an RYA centre who specialise in online and distance learning – read more here
