If you have a basic knowledge of navigation and chartwork* but need to get your theory improved in order to take our RYA Day Skipper Practical, this weekend course is what you need. *if you don’t have basic knowledge you can prepare by completing an online RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship course. Click here for details.
From 2017 the RYA Day Skipper certificate will be valid in all areas – Tidal and Non-Tidal. You can now get the same certificate whether you take your practical course in sunny Greece or rainy Britain. While this is great it does mean that we now require a higher level of tidal theory from our students taking a Day Skipper Practical. On a practical course in Greece you won’t experience tides, of course, but your instructor will test your knowledge to ensure that you can be awarded the certificate.
Before taking your practical course it is essential that you have adequate theoretical knowledge, which includes being able to plan a passage in an area with tides, calculating course to steer, and working out the time when you could cross a tidal bar.
Our weekend theory course will bring your basic knowledge of navigation up to the level required for Day Skipper. It is not an official RYA course so there will be no examination or certificate** but it’s an easy way to make sure your theory is up to scratch before getting on board to do the practical course.
** we may be able to arrange a formal Day Skipper Shorebased examination during the practical week for those who wish to do it. Contact us for details.
