Come for an Easter sailing holiday in Greece and learn all you’ll need to join a flotilla or charter a yacht next summer.
Our 12-day package (RYA Competent Crew, RYA Essential Navigation, & RYA Day Skipper Practical) has proved immensely popular this year. We’ll be running one at Easter 2012 and you can even tack on a marine radio operator’s course as well – giving you 4 certificates in just two weeks!
Places are limited so book now and take advantage of the best deals in airfares as well.
About the Course
You’ll sail on one of our main teaching yachts – either a Sun Odyssey 45 or a Bavaria 44. Both are comfortable boats for the maximum of five students we’ll have on board.
Your training will begin at 18:30 on Sunday 1 April when you’ll meet your instructor at our base on the pretty island of Aegina, near to Athens. During the next 5 days you will complete the RYA Competent Crew syllabus, living on board the yacht and sailing to different ports in this area.
On Friday afternoon you’ll return to Aegina and move ashore for two nights in a hotel while you study theory over the weekend.
The Essential Navigation course covers basic chart work, pilotage, passage planning, collision regulations, anchoring, safety procedures – and you’ll even get your own set of navigation instruments to keep for future use!
There will be time to explore the island a little on the Saturday afternoon – why not visit the Sanctuary of Aphaia set high on a hilltop?
You’ll step back on board your yacht on Sunday and spend the next 5 days doing your Day Skipper Practical course. This will give you a chance to put that theory into practice as you navigate around the islands. One evening you will do a 4-hour night sail, providing you with the experience you will need should you ever get caught out and need to make a journey in the dark.
Prices and Discount for two people
The total price for this package is 1890€ /£1710 per person. This includes 12 days tuition, accommodation on board for 11 nights and in a hotel for 2 nights, RYA course books and certificates for each part of the course, linen and towels, use of waterproofs if required, food for breakfast & lunch on board the yacht, and breakfast & lunch over the theory course. We also give you RYA Logbooks to record your mileage and in which to stick your certificates.
The only things not included are getting to Aegina and evening meals.
This price is for a cabin to yourself; we do not expect you to share with someone you don’t know. However, if you come with a partner or friend and will share a cabin you can have a 10% discount on the price, making it 1700€ / £1540 per person, including all the above items.
Who is this Suitable For?
You can take this package even if you are a complete beginner but it’s most suited to people who already have a little sailing experience but no formal tuition. We have students of all ages and from all over the world – all you need is to be reasonably active and have a sense of adventure!
What Certificates Will I Get?
You’ll be issued with a certificate for each part of the course that you pass successfully. There are no written examinations; you will be assessed by the instructor for each part of the course who will pass you if he/she is satisfied that you have reached the required level of knowledge and skill.
Most people easily pass the Competent Crew course and very few have any problems with the Essential Navigation course. The Day Skipper Practical course is the most challenging for those with little previous experience. As with any sport, people vary in their natural aptitude and not everyone can learn to skipper a yacht in just 12 days. Just as with a driving test, some people need a little more tuition before they are competent to go off on their own!
Those who successfully pass the Day Skipper Practical course will be awarded with an RYA photo-ID Day Skipper certificate. This is recognised for chartering a small yacht anywhere in the Mediterranean or other non-tidal sailing area.
If you do not pass the Day Skipper course the instructor can still sign off those elements that you have achieved so that you can concentrate on the parts that you need more practice with at a later date.
Add a Marine Radio Operator’s Certificate
We’re running a 1-day Marine Radio Operator’s course on Saturday 14 April. Many countries, such as Croatia, now require skippers to have a radio licence in addition to their sailing licence. This course covers the use of GMDSS radio for both everyday and emergency situations and includes ‘hands on’ use of specially adapted radio sets. Price 135€ per person including licence fee.
