Autumn Argolic Adventure

Autumn Argolic Adventure

You’ve passed your RYA course. Congratulations! Now what you need is some practice …

Why not join us for a week’s sailing to the picturesque Argolic Gulf at the beginning of October?

The Argolic Gulf is one of the prettiest, yet most unspoilt, areas of Greece. With high mountains as a backdrop, you’ll visit typical Greek fishing villages as well as ancient cities. It’s a little too far from Athens for most of the sailing crowd to venture but can be done in a week with a couple of longer sails – ideal for those wanting to build miles.

You’ll complete at least one Yachtmaster qualifying passage of over 60 nautical miles on this trip and you’ll also do some night sailing. There will be a qualified RYA instructor on board to ensure you are safe and to give you tips but the idea of this trip is for the crew to do most of the work and make most of the decisions.

If you have sufficient previous experience and advanced theoretical knowledge, it’s often possible to take an RYA Coastal Skipper course on board but the trip is unsuitable for those wishing to complete Day Skipper, as the focus is on building miles and experiencing longer sails rather than teaching basic boat-handling skills. My advice is that you’ll have a better time and get more from the trip if you simply relax and enjoy the sailing, gaining experience without having to worry about passing a course.

Where You’ll Go

On most of our mile-builders the yachts cover at least 300 nautical miles. As with all sailing, the route will be weather dependent, but the plan is to sail to the island of Poros on Saturday night and then head west on Sunday towards the Peloponnese coast. You’ll hopefully visit both the ancient city of Nafplion in the north of the Argolic Gulf and picturesque Monemvasia (known as the Gibraltar of Greece) in the south. There are lots of other memorable ports and villages to choose from as well.

Dates

The trip will start in the afternoon or early evening of Saturday 1 October. The official start time is 17:00 but you’ll leave as soon as everyone is on board and has had an initial safety briefing. Unlike our courses you won’t spend the first night in the marina; you’ll head off that day, night sailing for some of the time.

You’ll return to base on the evening of Friday 7 October and can stay on board until Saturday morning. You’ll sail all 7 days you are here (weather permitting of course!)

The Yachts

There will be two yachts on this trip. We’ve chartered a Sun Odyssey 49 from Athenian Yachting, the Jeanneau agent in Greece. This yacht will start and end at Alimos Marina, Kalamaki, which is about 40 minutes from Athens International Airport. Helena, our own Bavaria 45 will start on the same day from our base on Aegina island, and the two yachts will meet up in Poros on Saturday night.

Those who book first will be given a preference as to whether they start from Kalamaki or Aegina. (It will be possible for both yachts to start & finish in Kalamaki if this is what the majority of crew would prefer)

Sun Odyssey 49i, 2008

This is a big, comfortable yacht with a large galley, spacious saloon, beautifully finished chart table and navigation station, modern styling, and abundant natural light and fresh air. All of her four cabins have their own heads.

Bavaria 45 Cruiser, 2013

One of our newest yachts, this boat is comparable to most other mass-production cruising boats as far as its cockpit, deck and interior layouts are concerned. However it has impressed yachting magaxines with its sailing performance, which is exceptional in moderate to strong winds. She’s a lovely new yacht and is also available to charter, so this is a perfect opportunity to ‘try her out’ for the future.
