RYA Competent Crew is your first step in learning to sail a yacht. It’s a 5-day course with a relaxed schedule, suitable for complete beginners or those with a little experience. With tuition from our highly qualified Instructors, this course is part our most populars. In five days we’ll teach you the skills to know your way around a cruising yacht and to be able to assist your skipper. Competent Crew is also a fun, sociable course, and highly recommended whether you are travelling alone, with your partner, or with a group of friends. It’s also suitable for a private course or a family sailing holiday. Anyone of any age can enjoy this course, even if they’ve never stepped on a boat before!
If you have never set foot on a sail boat and wishes to learn the basics on board.
You are 12 years old and above and you are willing to learn.
You have always dream to be comfortable at sea on a cruising yacht and want to be able to assist your skipper during your next holiday!
You would like to grow further along the RYA courses but need a first experience.
The skills and confidence to act as crew on a cruising yacht. This course covers: how to steer the yacht, how to hoist and trim the sails, how to handle the anchor, and what all the various ropes do. You’ll be taught basic sailing theory, the names of parts of the boat, useful knots, how to respond to emergency situations, and personal safety guidelines.
Assessment is based on how well you have shown enthusiasm and actively learned and acted on the news taught skills and theory. No final exam! If your instructor declare that you are competent and safe to act as crew on small yacht out to sea in calm conditions, you will be complete the course.
At the end of your course you’ll be ready to help sail a yacht as a really useful member of the crew. You’ll also have enough practical experience to move on to the RYA Day Skipper Practical course.
Your own yacht cabin on board (only to share with your partner if applicable) with all the necessary items for your comfort: bedding and linens, towels, pillows.
Your RYA course book. You will receive a hard copy when arriving in Aegina. If you wishes to order an e-version early on, you can order one on the RYA webshop.
Your RYA Logbook to keep track of all your progress and experiences.
If you succeed: the RYA Competent Crew Diploma.

All prices for practical courses include all yachts expenses, breakfast and lunch. All activities ashore and dinner are at your own expense. Your travel expenses to get to Aegina are not covered.
You desire more privacy? We offer private versions of all our courses! Depending on the season, the type of boats, and the number of days, from €3,700 up to €7,950, you can book a yacht for yourself and friends/family to enjoy your time in a more intimate setting while learning the skills you want to complete. A qualified instructor will stay on board at all time to ensure safety but our team is used to not disturb your privacy. You can contact us and ask for more info and/or select “private” when enquiring a course.
