Cruising Instructor Pre Course Requirements

Cruising Instructors must hold a commercial endorsement prior to attending an instructor training course. They must continue to hold a valid commercial endorsement for their Instructor award to remain valid.

A number of additional training courses and medical fitness certificates are required

to be eligible for a commercial endorsement.

Your Professional Practices and Responsibilities certificate
A commercial endorsement
Your original, completed medical ML5 or ENG1, or any other that is recognised by the RYA
A copy of your RYA Basic Sea Survival certificate or STCW Personal Survival Techniques
A copy of your RYA Marine Radio SRC Certificate or other acceptable GMDSS Marine Radio Operator’s Certificate.

Professional Practices and Responsibilities course

It is a requirement for commercial endorsement holders to take the online Professional Practices and Responsibilities Course (PPR).This course is broken down into four modules:

  • Commercial environment – how you fit into the professional maritime world
  • People – the importance of correct manning, keeping your skills up to date and the safe management of commercial vessel
  • Vessel – the compulsory carriage and maintenance of safety equipment and how to create and implement risk control and operating procedures.
  • Purpose – making sure our vessel is suitable and legal for the work you are carrying, your obligations in protecting the environment, appropriate planning and situational awareness

Time allowed for this online course 6-8 hours.Assesment end of course is split into two sections totalling 2.5 hours.

What It Costs

Our RYA-qualified trainers deliver the course using modern classroom facilities and fully RYA-coded training yachts. With two boats running, you’ll benefit from training alongside like-minded candidates, sharing experiences, and gaining insights into how a professional sailing school operates—perhaps even a place you’d like to return to as an instructor.

The course fee of €1575 includes:

  • Accommodation on board

  • Expert tuition and online knowledge check

  • All yacht expenses (fuel, mooring fees, electricity, water, end cleaning)

  • Bedding and towels

  • Breakfasts and lunches on board
