Course Description

Advance your sailing skills

Take your sailing to the next level with the Online RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Shorebased course, designed for sailors progressing beyond Day Skipper. You must have completed an RYA Day Skipper Shorebased course or equivalent; this course is not suitable for beginners.

The course is fully online and self-paced, delivered by Navathome, an RYA-accredited centre. You’ll receive a course pack, navigation instruments, and support throughout your study. Booking can be done directly with Navathome or through us for a single payment.

This is a 40–50 hour course covering advanced navigation, passage planning, meteorology, safety procedures, and coastal seamanship, preparing you for Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Offshore practical training.

  • Sailors who have completed the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased course or have equivalent experience

  • Anyone looking to progress toward Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Offshore

  • Experienced sailors who want to refresh or expand their knowledge in navigation, weather, and safety procedures

What will you learn?

Building on Day Skipper theory, this course covers:

  • Tides & Streams: tidal causes, heights, tables, curves, secondary ports, tidal diamonds

  • Position Fixing & Course to Steer: compass variation, dead reckoning, estimated position, plotting with tidal flow and leeway

  • GPS & Electronic Navigation: GPS use, raster/vector charts, chart updates

  • Buoyage & Pilotage: buoy identification, lights/shapes, bearings, tidal graphs, safe harbour navigation

  • Safety at Sea: briefings, mayday/rescue, life jackets, abandon ship, fog navigation

  • Meteorology: weather forecasts, global/local systems, highs/lows, reliable sources

  • Passage Planning & Collision Regulations: planning passages, tides, pilotage, weather, wind, collision avoidance

  • Passage Making & Crew Management: longer passages, port entry/exit, refuges, waypoints, crew, provisioning
